I have long thought that I have the unmarketable skill of being able to predict songs that will become popular and eventually ridiculously overplayed (well, perhaps it would be profitable if I was in the music industry, but I don't have those connections ...). Essentially, I'll hear a song on a non-top 40 station (such as an adult contemporary or alternative station), and predict crossover success. Recent examples include The Fray, Anna Nalick, and Akon. Well, I guess I didn't blog about these predictions, but you'll just have to trust me that I thought about them (hey, I have a lot of time on my hands).
Anyways, I'm going to put my theory that this is an actual skill to the test and make another such prediction right now: the song "Boston" by Augustana will make its way to the Billboard Top Ten. I actually had never heard of this song until last night surfing through my XM stations on DirecTV, and then recognized it, I think maybe from a TV show or something, and was intrigued enough to download it today. In any event, at the moment, this might seem like a bold prediction - I did some homework, and apparently the song is off an album that was released in 2005, and the song currently sits at #38 on Billboard, and has been on the charts for 18 weeks already. However, on Monday, Augustana will be on TRL (which, admittedly I haven't watched in at least 5 years so I don't know if it still has as much clout as it used to), which, is why I'm making my prediction that "Boston" will quickly ascend the charts to the top ten pop songs.
I suppose I'll have to check the charts in a week or two to see how my prediction is looking. If I'm right, maybe I should consider a change in career path ...
